After a long, drawn-out winter, spring is finally upon us in Southern Ontario. And, as a general contractor, professional home builder or landscape design and construction company, we know that your schedule is booked with projects well into the warmer months.
To get you fired up for the busy season ahead, here’s a look at what’s trending in landscape design for 2017:
Low maintenance and enviro-friendly practices have become commonplace in the landscape supply industry, especially with fertilizers, soil mixtures and pest controls. But, for 2017, sustainability also extends to water conservation and lighting. Solar-powered or low-voltage accent lights are a top choice for adding drama and ambiance to surrounding landscapes, patios, decks, stairs and walkways. We’re also finding that more contractors are choosing permeable pavers, which soak excess run-off water into the ground instead of infiltrating nearby storm sewers and streams.
2. Edible Gardens
Remember last year when the price of cauliflower soared to $10 a head? Many Ontarians do. As food costs continue to rise, so does the popularity of eating locally-grown organic herbs, fruits and vegetables. As such, more homeowners are including vegetable gardens into their landscape designs, which are accented with beautiful rock, stone or natural wood, so they can enjoy healthy produce from their own backyards.
3. Outdoor Rooms & Kitchens
Speaking of food, nothing is more quintessentially Canadian than a backyard barbeque with family and friends. And, while furnishing an outdoor space with a simple dining set, checkered table cloth and cart-style barbeque was once the norm, we are seeing a trend towards outdoor rooms that are a true extension of the home, complete with elaborate outdoor kitchens, relaxed living/dining areas and state-of-the-art entertainment zones.
4. Fire Features
Heat lamps were popular, both commercially and residentially, as a way to add warmth to an outdoor space. However, for 2017, we’re seeing a trend towards one of the earth’s most basic elements – fire. This includes stand-alone natural stone fireplaces, which define an outdoor room and act as a focal point, as well as fire bowls, lanterns and tables, which add a flourish of grandeur. Fire features also extend the use of an outdoor space into the cooler months, making them more comfortable and usable from early spring to late fall.
5. Water Features
For 2017, we’re seeing a combination of sustainability and sophistication when adding functional, beautiful water features into landscape projects. Linear water spouts and sheer descent water features are very much on-trend – for their serene, calming effect and their modern, space- and water-saving designs.
6. Native Plants
Native plants are making a resurgence into landscapes across Southern Ontario because they are easier to grow and maintain since they are well-adapted to the conditions of our region. As a general rule, these species are very hardy and often require less water, care and pesticides. They also provide food, water and shelter to migrating birds, bees and butterflies, which nature-loving enthusiasts appreciate.
With the popularity of four season outdoor spaces, there is also a trend towards landscapes that offer year-round interest and colour with specific plant selections. This includes popular choices, like Serviceberry in the spring, Purple Coneflower in the summer, Blue Flag Iris in the fall and Feather Reed Grass in the winter. We’re also seeing a trend towards the mixing of complementing materials, like stone veneers, natural flagstone, quarry products, masonry and interlock, for a unique look no matter the season.
